Queensland's lifejacket wearing rules have been actively enforced for more than a year now, with Marine Officers issuing fines rather than warnings for boaties caught without one on in a high-risk situation. Most boat owners know that much by now. What catches people out is a separate requirement that gets less attention: the lifejacket itself has to meet the current New Zealand Standard. When these changes were first announced, most of the attention went to the wearing rule, largely because it was the one with a clear fine attached and a clear start date. The standard requirement received comparatively little coverage, despite affecting every recreational boat in the state rather than just the specific high-risk scenarios covered by the wearing rule. With enforcement now well established and Marine Officers actively checking compliance on the water, a boat owner who has done the right thing by putting a lifejacket on can still find themselves non-compliant if nobody has checked whether that particular lifejacket is still legal. Older vessels changing hands, family boats with lifejackets that have sat in a cabin locker for a decade, and hand-me-down gear are the most common places this breach shows up.
Start by pulling every lifejacket off the boat and checking for a visible manufacturer's label showing the buoyancy level and the AS4758 standard.
